A theme is a set of files that gives the website a certain predefined structure, as well as a customizable look and feel. It usually consists of an images folder full of image assets used by the theme, a set of php files that form the dynamic basis for the posts and pages, a style folder containing css files that determine the look and feel of various elements, and usually a single image file to act as a preview.
There are a variety of locations available to download themes. One of the most common and trusted sites is wordpress.org/themes. These themes have all been vetted for quality and are mostly free to use. There are also a variety of other providers that offer themes, both for free use or with a paid license. It is important to use themes that are from reputable sources, and that are compatible with the version of WordPress being used. It is also important for themes to be responsive and customizable in design.
I decided to go with a theme called Fairy Dark for a starter theme for this website. I compared this theme to the two themes that were already installed by default in Ionos: the Extendable theme (which was set as the original default) and the Twenty Twenty-Five theme. I evaluated all three of these themes using the criteria of Responsive, Customizable, Appropriate, Plugins (as in additional custom), and Compatibility (with the current WordPress version). I got this theme off of the Ionos menu. I installed it using the wp-admin console and activated it. It seems to be very customizable from the admin console. It is also responsive, offering previews for mobile, tablet and desktop views.
